Dieter Fahrer
Dieter Fahrer is a German filmmaker, who has directed internationally acclaimed documentaries like ‘Que Sera’ and ‘Jour de Nuit’. A man who wears many hats with equal aplomb, he is also a producer, cinematographer, writer and production manager. He started his career as a producer, camera assistant and director on numerous dramas and documentaries with Balzi and Cie from 1988 to 1996. He became the director of the company in 1997.
Dieter is a filmmaker of great gentleness and sensitivity. He handles fragile subjects with care and treats the characters with a lot of respect and affection. To forge these kind of bonds, he takes pains to become a part of the environment so as to be able to capture its poignancy as well as charm. For instance, before commencing the filming of ‘Que Sera’, which deals with the inmates of a retirement home and day care centre in Berlin, he worked as a nurse’s aide at the centre. The result is a film that expresses the suffering that comes with old age, but at the same time also captures the warmth and sense of humour that is an integral part of it. The film urges the audience to look at the elderly with more humility and reflect on the way they are isolated from society.
Dieter believes in a more humane approach to living together, just like humour and suffering co-exist in all his films.
